In mid 19th century, Montmartre was an idyllic countryside village with quiet streets and abundant gardens. The old urban structure is preserved until nowadays and therefore you need to climb many stairs to really get to know this mystical borough.
Artists lived in Montmartre because, in addition to simpler and cheaper conditions, they could easily find new models in the cabarets and cafes. Degas, Renoir, van Gogh, Picasso, Dali and Matisse– they all lived and worked in Montmartre for some time and gave the place an aura that has survived to the present day. At the front of the Sacred Heart Church, you can see the breathtaking panoramic view over the entire city of Paris.
